Newbie in the (round)house!

Postby Julie Martin on May 8th, 2013, 2:48 pm

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and re-enactment though I've been a big fan of living history for a very long time, I just never found an Iron Age group near me (Kent, UK). Well a group has just started in Kent called De Bello Canzio thanks to Dylan Hampshire. The group covers the time from Caesar to Claudius. Most of the members seem to be more into doing the Roman stuff, but I'm going to concentrate on the Iron Age. I've been a field archaeologist for over 20 years in the UK and am presently working on a B.A./I.A. site (mainly field systems). I have loads of questions to ask about sourcing historically accurate items and would greatly appreciate ANY advice people can give me. At the moment I'm most concerned about sourcing accurate cloth for a dress and peplos.
Remember, I'm a Newbie, so be gentle!

Thanks Bob, will you be at the Military Odyssey or some other event in the southeast?

OH Yes ! Very much so ... A couple of us will be there with the roman group Leg II augusta.
We will have our small living history setup and our very popular "warrior " training set set up for the kidds.
We also do a little Combat. ( non scripted) .

Cool. See you there if I'm not at a Forensic Archaeology conference in The Hague. What a choice to make, re-enactment or dead bodies...

Hi Julie, although I've been re-enacting for 10 years, the iron age is pretty new to me too. My advice is just to go cautiously and not source things quickly without checking to see if there are any extant examples to take a cue from. Some things you have to 'wing', such as clothing, using best guesses, evidence from abroad and so on. A big factor also is 'what can I get hold of?'

Evening Julie,
We are a fairly new group based in Leicester. We recreate Tungrian auxiliaries of the first century as well as a couple of Brigantes. Good to hear of another group starting up in our period. Look forward to seeing your group develop, if we too can offer any help please just ask.

Thanks Bob, Chedworth may be an option. I used to live near there, and in fact did a bit of rescue archaeology there in the 90s. Haven't been there since. Are those pesky rabbits still destroying the place?

Hi Julie and welcome!

I'm fairly new to re-enactment (three events and a lot coming up!), and what I did was that I almost stalked one wise woman here in my tribe. I learned a lot, and double checked anything. The advice they gave me was that the beginning is the hardest, but if you get started, you'll gain more and more knowledge along the way.
