I brewed a delicious beer using bog myrtle and have just received a consignment of heather ale. Drunk by the ancients because they liked it not because the water was bad. As a nineteenth century soldier said of boiling water. "What is the point, it just makes it sodding hot."
Heather Ale: A Galloway Legend (triggering warning if you have been hunted across the moors by a king)
Robert Louis Stevenson (1890)
From the bonny bells of heather
They brewed a drink long-syne,
Was sweeter far than honey,
Was stronger far than wine.
They brewed it and they drank it,
And lay in a blessed swound
For days and days together
In their dwellings underground.http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/heather- ... /comments/
