Pre-Augustan Pottery in Gaul

Postby Becky Watkins Tien on March 10th, 2010, 10:59 am

Does anyone know any good resources for pictures of pottery from pre-Augustan Gaul? If I look for "Gaul pottery," I get nothing but info on Roman mass production of terra sigillata, which is slightly too late for me. I'm focusing on southern Gaul ca 50 BCE.

Here's a few that can get you started, though you'll have to read mostly French:

Les Mouvements celtiques du Ve au Ier siècle avant notre ère : actes du XXVIIIe colloque organisé à l'occasion du IXe Congrès international des sciences préhistoriques et protohistoriques, Nice, le 19 septembre 1976
by Paul Marie Duval; Václav Kruta (1979). Gives lots of drawings and associated finds. OCLC Number: 9558156

Les Celtes (L'Univers des formes) by Paul-Marie Duval (1977)
OCLC number: 461831200

The Prunay Workshop: Technical Examination of La Tene Bichrome Painted Pottery from Champagne, by V Rigby; A P Middleton; I C Freestone; in World Archaeology, Jun., 1989, vol. 21, no. 1, p. 1-16. ISSN: 0043-8243, OCLC Number: 482224978. This is excellent!

Brittany and the Atlantic Rim in the Later First Millennium BC, by Barry Cunliffe; in Oxford Journal of Archaeology, 19, no. 4 (2000): 367-386. ISSN: 0262-5253, OCLC Number: 366167073

Oh, and check out these links:

This is amazing stuff: http://arscretariae.romandie.com/

And a site report with lots of drawings. Dressel I and II amphoras are present, so it could be the right period you're asking for: http://racf.revues.org/index100.html

Perfect! Thanks for the help. *smile* The last link comes out a little funny via the computer translator, but I found this other link to the article that has a better English description:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/30435754_La_ncropole_gauloise_de_Vaugrignon__Esvres-sur-Indre_(Indre-et-Loire)
La nécropole gauloise de “ Vaugrignon ” à Esvres-sur-Indre (Indre-et-Loire)
Authors: Sandrine Riquier
This burial ground, which was used from the middle of the 2nd century B.C. until reign of Augustus, contained twenty-nine tombs, including one cremation. Its study allows us to follow the evolution of the burial rites (from the poorest tombs to those with amphorae or weapons) and to address the status of children. The analysis of the objects shows some original deposits, such as: three fibulae in bags, shield fragments in babies tombs, divers objects associated with iron working, coins and " funeral wares ” specific to certain age groups. Scatterings of burnt objects show up post-inhumation funeray practices. The comparison was made with prestigious " biturige ” type graves from the group of burial at nearly Fléré-la-Rivière. It gave an occasion to establish a strict social hierachy through the small-finds assemblages and to illustrate a hitherto poorly know of the population.
